About This Blog

"By the side of the everlasting Why, there is a Yes--a transitory Yes if you like, but a Yes." -- E.M. Forster, A Room with a View

In the film A Room with a View, and probably the novel itself, there is a section entitled "In Santa Croce Without a Baedeker". Santa Croce is a church in the main square of Florence, which I have visited. A Baedeker was a British travel guidebook.

I have adopted a quote from E.M. Forster's novel as the theme of this blog. I do not pretend to be a guide or sherpa, and thus this blog is no Baedeker. But this will definitely be a blog with a view -- hopefully educated and informed, hopefully entertaining.

I do not expect the gentle (or not so gentle) reader to agree with the view(s) so expressed. Indeed, I invite feedback and comment, discussion and debate.

And so I begin to seek, in my own way, a transitory Yes to the everlasting Why. I hope you will tag along with me on the journey.
